The kick off to the 2025 Toyota GR Cup Series North America season took place at the iconic Sonoma Raceway this past weekend. The team fielded two drivers, Karl Forman in the #03 and Mike LaMarra in the #73, both of whom showed significant improvement over the course of the weekend despite the challenging and unpredictable weather conditions in Wine Country.
The action began on Thursday with a test day, followed by official practice sessions on Friday. Drivers fine-tuned their performance, and teams made adjustments to their setups ahead of the opening event. Saturday marked the first of two race days, with qualifying setting the grid for the season's first race later that afternoon.
In a highly competitive field, Forman clocked the 25th-fastest time in qualifying, while LaMarra secured the 28th spot. Despite starting deep in the field, both drivers made strides during the race. LaMarra was one of the biggest movers, gaining eight positions to finish 20th. Forman also advanced, starting from 25th and crossing the finish line in 23rd.
Sunday brought even more difficult weather. A heavy downpour throughout the morning created slick, treacherous conditions as drivers took to the track for the second round of qualifying. Despite standing water and widespread issues for several competitors, Forman earned the 18th-fastest lap, with LaMarra close behind in 20th.
With the field now set, Forman and LaMarra would start the second race in single file due to the track evolution from the morning’s downpour. The race conditions continued to be tough, with drying sections of the track and ever-changing grip levels. Forman finished 22nd while LaMarra was classified in 29th.
“It was a challenging weekend for both of our drivers,” said Ryan Eversley, Precision Racing LA's Driver Coach. “The tricky qualifying conditions allowed us to start a bit higher than we had in practice, but when the race began, the drivers had to navigate their way through others they hadn’t encountered before. I’m pleased with how both Karl and Mike adapted to the conditions. They kept their cars relatively clean, which was impressive given the weather, and showed progress throughout the weekend. I’m very happy with their development.”
Next up for the Precision Racing LA team is the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, for the Toyota GR Cup North America series on the April 25-27 weekend.
